What the dark actually costs

It's never "just a dark hallway."

Every home has five dark spots. Most people live with them until the night something goes wrong.

An older woman at the top of dark stairs at nightAgeing parents

Mum gets up at 2am. The stairs are pitch black. The switch is at the bottom.

About one in four people over 65 reports a fall each year, and most of those happen at home: on stairs, in hallways, on the way to the bathroom in the dark. A light switch at the wrong end of a staircase is how it starts.

"Mum is going to the loo in the dark and getting disoriented and falling. We've had a few incidents. My dad is now hardly sleeping with worry."Caregiver forum
→ Bedroom, landing, stairs, bathroom: the whole route lights itself before she takes a step.

No ceiling light in the bedroom. So there's a lamp. And a cord. And a toddler.

Floor lamps tip. Cords get pulled. Bulbs get hot. If your rental has no overhead fixture, you've been choosing between a dark room and a hazard at eye level.

"My apartment doesn't have lights built in, and lamps are a no-go with my toddler."Verified buyer, Amazon
→ Light on the ceiling. Nothing to pull over, no cord, no heat.

You don't want to wake them. So you walk the hallway blind.

Flip the big light and the whole house is up: your partner, the baby, you. Don't, and you're patting walls with a phone torch, half asleep, toe into the door frame.

"Midnight bathroom trip? Don't wake yourself, or the whole house, with bright ceiling lights."What customers tell us
→ A dim, warm glow that fades on as you step out and off after you're back in bed.

"Our house didn't come with lights in the closets."

Deep closets, pantries, the under-stairs cupboard, the laundry: the rooms you use every day are the ones nobody wired. Kids won't go in. You can't find anything. And an electrician wants $150 to $300 per fixture, holes in the plaster, and a week.

How it works

On when it's dark and you move. Off after you leave.

Two sensors decide together: a motion sensor and a light sensor. So it never wastes battery in daylight, and never leaves you standing in the dark.

What's in the box?

Each light comes with its own steel mounting strip, double-sided adhesive squares, two screw holes for a permanent fix, a USB-C charging cable and a remote. Instructions included.

How long does the battery really last?

Two honest numbers. In Auto Mode (motion-triggered, a few times a day in a closet or hallway) a charge lasts up to 60 days. In constant-on mode it runs about 10 hours. If you want it on all evening in a living room, this is not the light for that.

Will it fall off the ceiling?

The light snaps onto a rigid steel strip, not a foam pad. The strip mounts with strong double-sided adhesive squares and also has two screw holes if you want it permanent. Clean the surface, press for 30 seconds, and wait a few hours before snapping the light on.

Where can I use it?

Closets, hallways, stairs, bathrooms, pantries, nurseries, garages, sheds, RVs, basements, under cabinets, above the shower (splash-resistant, not submersible). Any flat ceiling or wall.

Install in under a minute

Peel. Stick. Snap.

No wiring. No drilling. No electrician. No landlord.

Peel the adhesive
1
PeelPress the adhesive squares onto the steel strip. Wipe the ceiling spot clean.
Press the strip to the ceiling
2
StickPress the strip flat to the ceiling for 30 seconds. (Or use the two screw holes.)
Snap the light on

Pull test
Pull test: stayed put.The number-one complaint about cheap stick-on lights is that they fall in the middle of the night. Ours snaps onto a rigid steel strip, not a foam pad — with two screw holes if you want it permanent.

Most sensor lights quote one number and hope you don't check. In Auto Mode ours wakes for a few seconds when you pass, then sleeps — that's how a charge lasts two months in a closet or hallway. Charge it over a coffee.

"I stopped lying awake listening for her on the stairs."

Mum is 79 and lives alone. Two on the stairs, one on the landing, one above the bathroom door. Now the whole route lights up as she walks and she never touches a switch. I did the lot on a Sunday afternoon.

"The lamp is gone. So is the cord. So is the worry."

Our rental has no ceiling light in his room. We'd been using a floor lamp he'd started pulling on. This sits on the ceiling, comes on dim and warm when we walk in for the night feed, and he sleeps through it.

"First week in two years I haven't woken my husband up."

Set it to the lowest warm setting. It fades on as I step into the hall, I can see the bathroom door, and it's off by the time I'm back in bed. No phone torch, no stubbed toes, no big light.

"My bedroom finally has a ceiling light. My landlord has no idea."

Moved into a flat with no overhead light in the bedroom or hallway. Was quoted $900 to wire it, which I'm obviously not doing for a rental. Four of these and it feels like a real apartment. The strips will come off when I leave.

"Thirty-eight years with a clip lamp in the pantry. Fixed in a minute."

1920s house, plaster ceilings, didn't want anyone cutting into them. Stuck the strip up, snapped the light on, and the pantry is brighter than the kitchen. Charged it once since August.

"Laundry, pantry, garage. I haven't touched a switch in a month."

Every room I walk into with my arms full now just turns on. I used to flick the switch with my elbow or leave it on all day. Battery is still going after five weeks.

Questions

Everything people ask before they buy.

How bright is it?

Bright enough to light a closet, pantry, landing or small bathroom on its own, and a hallway with one every 2–3 metres. It is a task and transit light, not a replacement for your living-room ceiling light. Use the 6500K daylight setting at 100% when you want maximum brightness.

Does it come on in the daytime and waste battery?

No. The built-in light sensor keeps it off when the room is already bright. Day/Night sensing mode is on by default; you can switch to day-and-night sensing with the remote if you want it in a windowless room.

Will my cat or dog set it off?

Mounted on a ceiling at normal height, most pets pass under the sensing cone without triggering it. On a wall at knee height, they will. Ceiling mounting is best.

What surfaces does it stick to?

Painted ceilings and walls, wood, tile, metal, laminate. Avoid heavily textured popcorn ceilings and freshly painted walls — or use the screws.

Will the adhesive damage my paint when I move out?

Warm the plate with a hairdryer for 20 seconds and peel slowly from one corner. On good paint it comes off clean. If you're in a very short lease, use the screws (two tiny holes) or a Command strip instead.

How do I charge it on a ceiling?

You don't climb a ladder with a cable. Pull the light off the magnetic plate, plug the USB-C cable in on the counter, and snap it back when it's done. A few hours from empty to full.

How long does it stay on after I leave?

Your choice: 15 s, 30 s, 60 s or 2 minutes, set from the remote. There's also a constant-on mode, a timed-cycle mode and an off mode.

Is it waterproof?

Splash-resistant — fine on the ceiling above a shower or in a steamy bathroom. Not for direct spray or outdoors in the rain.

Why not just buy one on Amazon?

You can find lights that look similar. Ours ships with a rigid steel strip (so it doesn't fall), a remote with 5 colour temperatures and 10 brightness levels, honest battery numbers, a 1-year replacement warranty and a real human on support. The cheap listings give you a foam pad, 30 days and silence.
